Trip planning that starts at the trailhead.

Most travel sites sort places to stay by a circle on a map. In the Blue Ridge that circle lies: two parking lots for the same mountain can be fifty minutes apart by road. HikeShenandoah connects the hikes, the trailheads and the stays with real drive times, so you can plan the trip around the trail.

How we measure drive times

Every drive time on the site comes from the road network, not a straight line. We route between each stay, trailhead parking lot, town and business with OSRM over OpenStreetMap data. The current set was computed on October 19, 2026.

They are free-flow estimates: no traffic, no weather, no entrance-station queues. Mountain roads and Skyline Drive, with its 35 mph limit, often run slower than the estimate, so leave a margin. Where we show the straight-line distance, it is there for comparison only and never used to order results.

We route to the parking area, not the summit or waterfall. Old Rag summit, for example, is reached from two separate lots, and we always tell you which one a time refers to. Closed lots are skipped.

How stays are ranked

When you start from a hike or a place, stays inside your drive limit are scored on:

  • Drive time to the parking area: 40%
  • Being in the same area as the hike: 20%
  • Whether the host has verified the listing: 15%
  • How complete the listing is: 10%
  • How recently we checked its facts: 10%
  • Your filters, such as bringing a dog: 5%

Nobody can pay to rank higher. Our founder's cabin gets no boost. These weights are a starting point that we will tune in the open.

Where facts come from

Trail distances, elevation, difficulty, pet rules, tickets and closures come from the National Park Service, and each page links to its source with the date we checked it. Business details come from each business's own website. Verified hosts write and approve their own listings. Unclaimed listings show only public facts and stay out of search engines until a host claims them.

We never show prices or availability we cannot verify. Every stay says to check with the host.

Photos

Most photos come from the National Park Service's public-domain collection; the rest are Creative Commons photographs from Wikimedia Commons contributors. Every photo is credited where it appears and on the photo credits page. We do not copy photos from booking platforms.

Who runs this

HikeShenandoah is an independent site built by the owner of a cabin at the foot of Old Rag. It is not affiliated with the National Park Service or any booking platform. Our founder also owns Birch's Library, a cabin in Syria, and runs HikeOldRag.com for it. We say so on its listing and wherever our guides recommend it, and it is ranked by the same rules as everyone else.
