Privacy
You can use the site without an account
Browsing, searching, the map and the trip planner work without signing in. Trips you save are stored in your own browser, not on our servers. Accounts are for hosts who list a place.
What we store
- Email sign-ups: your email address, the page you signed up from and the time. Used only to send the weekly email. Unsubscribe from any email or write to us and we delete it.
- Host accounts: your email (to sign you in and contact you about your listing), and the name and phone you choose to add. Sign-in uses a one-time emailed link and a cookie that keeps you signed in for 30 days; we store only scrambled (hashed) versions of both. If you opt in, we also email you a few times a year about new tools for hosts.
- Listings: what hosts enter, the photos they upload with their statement that they may publish them, the exact location used to work out drive times (shown publicly only if the host chooses), and claim details we use to confirm ownership. We keep a log of changes and approvals.
- Earlier host applications: what was entered in our previous application form.
- Outbound clicks: when you click a booking link, we record which listing, which page you came from, the destination website and the time, so hosts can see that HikeShenandoah sent them visitors. We do not record your IP address or tie clicks to you.
- Corrections you send us by email.
What we do not do
No advertising trackers, no selling or sharing your information with marketers. We use Cloudflare to host the site, which processes requests as our service provider. Map tiles are loaded from OpenFreeMap and terrain from Amazon's open data registry; photos load from Wikimedia. Those services receive your IP address when your browser requests them.
